The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is warning people across the globe to be on the alert for so-called “phantom hackers,” a group of criminals that have been stealing millions of dollars from unsuspecting victims.
The phantom hackers use a variety of tactics to gain access to bank and other financial accounts, including phishing, malware, and social engineering. They can also use stolen passwords and other credentials to access online financial accounts.
Once they have access, the phantom hackers can transfer or withdraw large sums of money without the account holder's knowledge. To make matters worse, the phantom hackers often use sophisticated techniques to cover their tracks and make it difficult to trace the stolen funds.
To protect yourself, it recommends taking the following precautions:
1. Use strong and unique passwords for all your online accounts.
2. Enable two-factor authentication whenever possible.
3. Install and regularly update anti-virus software and a firewall on your computer.
4. Be aware of phishing scams, and never click on links or open attachments in emails from unknown sources.
5. Monitor your financial accounts regularly for any suspicious activity.
6. Contact your financial institution immediately if you suspect you have been a victim of phantom hacking.
